Dr. Osama Mohammed is a Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Associate Dean of Research at the College of Engineering and Computing. He is the Director of the Energy Systems Research Laboratory at Florida International University. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
Professor Mohammed joined Florida International University in 1983. Since that time, he became internationally known for his many contributions in the energy field and related areas. He has developed the energy systems educational and research programs at FIU. He has advanced in the academic ranks and became a well thought-after educator and researcher worldwide. At an early stage in his career, in 1994 he became a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). IEEE Fellowship is the highest recognition given by the organization to top engineers who made a significant contribution in their fields. Professor Mohammed is a recognized researcher and a great teacher while bringing a benefit in developing educational programs, building research programs, creating laboratory and supervising significant numbers of undergraduate and graduate students who are well trained and ready to contribute the workforce.  One of the most important contributions to FIU made by Professor Mohammed is his pioneering work in the fields of Power Systems, Computational Electromagnetics, power electronics and Energy Cyber Physical Systems. He is one of very few scientists in the nation who had realized the importance of these fields and now we can see it as national strategic initiatives worldwide.  Professor Mohammed is one of very few professors who has graduated a significant number of MS and PhD Students who could immediately find highly selective tenure-track faculty positions and in prestigious national universities and major industry. His support to the undergraduate students through internships and laboratory involvement from his research funding is equally impressive. He put FIU on the map in these important science and technology fields and many graduate students worldwide seek his mentorship and advice.
Benchmarked against all full professors of engineering in the United States, Dr. Mohammed ranks in the highest percentiles on measures of scholarly productivity, including peer-reviewed papers, grant funding, prestigious awards, and literature citations.  His work is frequently cited by others worldwide with an H-index of more than 40 according to Google Scholar and ISI web of science. Teaching
Professor Mohammed has initiated, developed and taught more than 20 courses in power and energy systems, Numerical methods, Electromagnetics and Artificial Intelligence applications over the past 35 years at FIU at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Since 1996, he developed the Asynchronous Learning Environment for teaching his electrical engineering courses on a web based system as means to make himself available to his students 24 hours a day. This web-based environment was created through a grant, he obtained, from the Sloan Foundation (http://www.aln.fiu.edu) back in 1996. He developed Power Electronics, Electric Drives Laboratories and the Smart Grid Test-bed as educational platforms with funding from DoE and ONR to enhance student experience. (http://www.energy.fiu.edu). Professor Mohammed receives excellent student evaluations and he always utilizes their feedback for continuous improvement.
Professor Mohammed developed new methodologies in Physics-based modeling for the design and optimization of electric drives. He developed new ideas related to the study of smart energy systems involving sustainable and alternate sources for utility Smart Grid and for electric vehicles. His interests are aimed at solving the Smart Grid operation and communication puzzle for the utility and customer based systems. He performed research related to DC Distribution Architectures for new energy systems including future naval platforms. He developed Real-Time distributed simulation environments with Hardware in the Loop. He is also involved students in product development through computational prototyping tools. Professor Mohammed has continued to transfer his vast research accomplishments to the classroom and the involvement of undergraduate and graduate students in his laboratories. Through a number of his Office of Naval Research grants, he created the ONR Scholars program in which he involved numerous undergraduate students in research experiences by having them work on projects alongside MS and doctoral candidates in his laboratories. Over the past the past 35 years, Professor Mohammed has 100% track record in having the students involved in his group secure significant jobs before graduation or within one semester of graduation.
Professor Mohammed has a truly student centered mindset and he renders great services to his students. He developed facilities and provided resources to make sure his students succeed.  He financially supports and mentors students effectively. He gets deeply involved in all technical and professional aspects of his student’s work. He created significant research capabilities through his research funding and involving students at the undergraduate and graduate levels in developing these facilities. He supports student teams for their senior design projects. He takes undergraduate and graduate student teams to national technical paper and hardware/software competitions. Many of Professor Mohammed students received national and international awards for their technical papers over the past 35 years. He involved hundreds of undergraduate students in research and laboratory experiences by teaming them with graduate students. He supported many undergraduate students as interns through his funded ONR Student Scholar Program. All undergraduate and graduate students who have been involved in research in his laboratory are now in industry, academia or have gone to graduate studies at FIU or elsewhere. All of his doctoral students graduate with a decent number of journal and conference publications. The educational impact of Prof. Mohammed’s research on his students is great and this has been reflected on his student’s research productivity and the awards they receive.
Professor Mohammed sets an example in creating synergy between the resea rch and educational aspects of an academic environment. The unique synergy he created at the energy systems research laboratory is very relevant to the needs of industry and the technical readiness level of his research activities are well above those seen in academic institutions around the country. For this reason, many students and researchers from around the world seek to join his research group and work specifically under his supervision.
Through Professor Mohammed’s efforts, FIU has become a member of the (DOE)-Sponsored Nationwide Consortium of Universities to Revitalize Electric Power Engineering Education by State-of-the-Art Laboratories. This consortium of more than 100 US universities which is led by the University of Minnesota, and its objective is to revitalize US power engineering education programs in institutions of higher education to meet immediate and near-future needs through implementation of state-of-the-art laboratories in power and energy engineering, which will then become part of an overall new electrical energy systems curriculum. Furthermore, FIU is also member of the FPL led Department of Energy (DOE)-Project with five (5) universities to develop new courses and educational material in energy systems. The courses he developed are now part of our graduate curriculum at FIU and part of the new Energy Cyber Physical Systems Online MS degree program.
Professor Mohammed has given tireless efforts in promoting the university and the engineering profession in STEM fields. Particularly, his many years of efforts throughout the state of Florida by organizing student competitions and engaging the community of engineering professionals from various engineering organizations to assist in those endeavors. Professor Mohammed has provided opportunities for university engineering students, such as IEEE student branches not only at FIU but also in other university in South Florida area. He helped them in organizing their activities to meet and work with engineering professionals from local companies and leaders of professional societies. Professor Mohammed does this gladly on purely volunteer basis at a very high level of professionalism.
The impact of Professor Mohammed’s efforts on the local community is great and can best be measured by considering the large percentage of Future City (FC) contestants that go on to study a STEM career and in addition it is an important outreach event for FIU, as a major force in the community. Also students involved in research at his laboratory receive excellent reviews and awards for their research accomplishments. The record of accomplishment of his students receiving job offers upon graduation is at 100%. Dr. Mohammed has been the driving force working behind the scenes for FIU and Community.

Graduate Student Mentorship

Professor Mohammed’s role as an advisor and mentor of graduate students is to help them see the overall picture when identifying their research topics. One of the most important aspects is the value they gain from teaming on various project tasks. In his mentorship, he has emphasized the importance of creating a link between practical and industrial issues to develop new ideas and products. As research and development performers, he has stressed on the peer review aspect as well as sustained progress towards reaching their goal of contributing and/or enhancing the current state of knowledge. He has spent significant time with his doctoral students each week reading their publications to ensure their success. He has also involved external examiners from major government research labs and other universities on his student doctoral committees. In this process, they are taught how to continue to improve their output and align it with their research proposal and needed outcomes. Each doctoral student always has several publications in journals and major conference records to ensure an adequate peer review with hardware-based verification schemes for their work. Their publications have already produced significant citations which provide the doctoral candidates with a head start on their own research once they graduate. Many of his students have won awards for excellence in publications, paper competitions and travel grants to present their work at international technical conferences. Some of their dissertations have even been converted into books. Eleven recent patents have recently been awarded or filed by FIU as a result of the research topics assigned to my doctoral students. His mentorship of Masters level students with a thesis are equally as important yielding similar results.
Professor Mohammed truly set an example in creating synergy between the research and educational aspects of an academic center in his research team at FIU. They have developed great capabilities in terms of interdisciplinary research and emphasizing the importance of conducting research that is relevant to the government, industry and community. This unique attribute not only generates relevance, but also provides continued financial support while providing an unparalleled opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students alike to develop the skillsets most suitable to the needs of the industry and the nation. As a professor, he tries to set an example in terms of sustained technical contributions that are distinguished from others by a virtue of innovation, completeness and clarity. Furthermore, he does his best to instill the value of continuous improvement and hard work leading to greater recognition. Graduates from Professor Mohammed’s laboratory and research teams have become leaders in their respective fields. This has led to significant recognition by the IEEE Cyril Veinott award from the IEEE Power and Energy society and being elected as Fellow of both IEEE and the Applied Computational Electromagnetic Society. Their continued work in the area of smart grid optimization and control has led to recent major funding on energy cyber physical systems from the US Department of Energy to the tune of $12.2M for the consortium as well as from the Office of Naval Research for Energy Cyber Security on Naval platform. His team sets a high example for doctoral students to emulate in their work toward achieving their ultimate goals.

Research Activities

Professor Mohammed is a world renowned for his contributions in power and energy systems. He has published more than 700 articles in major IEEE Transactions and journals as well as international conference proceedings. He has recently received four patents and filed 11 more in the past few years at FIU as a result of his research and the direct involvement of his students. He has also co-authored a book and 9 book chapters. His work receives significant citations according to ISI web of science and Google Scholar. He supervised the research work 33 doctoral students over the past 20 years; many of whom are currently in prominent positions around the country in academic institutions and/or industrial and research organizations in the USA and abroad. He currently supervises the dissertation work of 11 more doctoral candidates and 5 post-doctoral Fellows and visiting researchers from around the world.  It is worth noting that out of Professor Mohammed doctoral students, (12) twelve of these doctoral students came from Egyptian Universities with 6 of them come from Helwan University in Egypt.
Professor Mohammed has been elected Fellow of both IEEE and the Applied Computational Electromagnetic Society (ACES) in addition to receiving prestigious international awards for his outstanding technical and research contributions. Professor Mohammed has secured more than $30 Million in research funding as PI and Co-PI over the past 35 years from major Federal agencies such as ONR, NSWC, NSF, DoE, DoED and industries.
Professor Mohammed frequently receives invitations from major industrial and research organizations and well as international conferences to speak as Keynote, Plenary and/or Invited presentations. He chaired 8 major International conferences and brought mo st of them to the South Florida area. He received several prestigious awards from the professional, community. Professor Mohammed has made significant contributions to the field of electric energy, power electronics and smart grid systems. The technical aspects of his work and the great research capabilities that he built at FIU, have major educational impact. His research demonstrates both depth and broad coverage and sets an example in creating synergy between the research and educational aspects of an academic environment. His research is very relevant to the needs of industry and the technical readiness level of his research activities are well above those seen in academic institutions around the country. This unique attribute not only creates relevance to industry and provides continued support from industry but also provides an unparalleled opportunity for the undergraduate and graduate students to develop skillsets and mindsets most suitable to respond to needs of the industry.

Prof. Mohammed’s technical contributions are distinguished from many others by the virtue of its innovation, completeness and clarity. His work has been cited very frequently by his peers and industry alike. He has sustained a very substantial research program over three decades at FIU. Various industrial and government agencies have benefited from his research accomplishments. Graduates from Dr. Mohammed’s program have become leaders in their respective fields and this has been a great contribution of his work.
Prof. Mohammed has served the profession in various leadership positions and capacities.  He has developed world class research facilities which has empowered many undergraduate and graduate students to pursue research. Prof. Mohammed’s contribution to the reputation and standing of his department, college and university as a comprehensive research/education institution of excellence are priceless. In compliment to his technical strength, Prof. Mohammed is open to collaborative efforts, taking initiatives, and leading multi-university efforts. He has participated and involved FIU in several multi university proposals and consortia in education and research. Most recently, his collaborative efforts have resulted in the funding of the DoE Center for Securing Electric Energy Delivery Systems (SEEDS), made possible by a $12.2 million award from the U.S. Department of Energy, augmented by $3.1 million in matching funds from the research participants.  In addition to Professor Mohammed research team at FIU, the consortium also includes faculty from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Carnegie Mellon University, and Lehigh University, MIT in addition, Arkansas Electric Cooperative Corporation as the industry partner. 

Professional Service

Professor Mohammed has lectured extensively around the world with invited and plenary talks at major research and industrial organizations worldwide. He serves as editor of several IEEE Transactions and Journals. He has been general chair for 8 major international IEEE conferences which brought hundreds of renowned world researchers to the South Florida Region in the past 20 years. Also, he served or currently serving as Technical Program Chair for five major IEEE International Conference. He was the president of the Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society, 2002-2011. In addition, he served as the International Steering Committee Chair for two major International IEEE conferences. He has held leadership positions at many technical and professional society committees and standards working groups.
Professor Mohammed served the university, college and department in many capacities as chair or a member.  He rendered important professional service efforts in promoting the university and the engineering profession throughout the state and within our local community. Particularly, he organized student national competitions and brought engineering professionals from various engineering organizations to assist in those endeavors. Professor Mohammed has provided opportunities for university engineering students in organizing their activities to meet and work with engineering professionals from local companies and leaders of professional society chapters.
Dr. Mohammed organizes all components of the National Engineers Week Future City Competition for South Florida Region. This competition is for middle schools with the winner of which goes to Washington DC to compete at the National Competition. Professor Mohammed has organized the final competition at FIU every January since 2001. This annual event brings several hundred students, teachers, mentors, judges, volunteers and engineers from Florida Junior high schools, universities, industries and professional organizations. The event is usually covered by local media and brings an important notice to FIU as a major force in community reach in a meaningful way to aid the students and to further their knowledge and education in STEM fields.
Professor Mohammed is an Editor of IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion and IEEE Transactions on Magnetics. He has been editor of IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, and IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications. He is also an Editor of COMPEL and was editor-in-chief of the IEEE Transactions on Magnetics-conferences, the Power Engineering Letters. Professor Mohammed is the past President of the Applied Computational Electromagnetic Society (ACES). He received many awards for excellence in research, teaching and service to the profession and has delivered numerous invited lectures at scientific organizations around the world.
Professor Mohammed has been the general chair of several international conferences including; ACES 2006, 2010 and 2019, IEEE-CEFC 2006 and 2016, IEEE-IEMDC 2009 and 2017, IEEE-ISAP 1996 and COMPUMAG-1993. He is Vice Chair for IEEE IWAT 2019. He has also chaired technical programs for other major international conferences including; IEEE-CEFC 2018, IEEE-CEFC 2010, IEEE-CEFC-2000 and the 2004 IEEE Nanoscale Devices and System Integration. Dr. Mohammed also organized and taught many short courses on power systems, Electromagnetics and intelligent systems in the U.S.A and abroad. Professor Mohammed has served ACES in various capacities for many years. He also serves IEEE in various Boards, committees and working groups at the national and international levels.
